The team
Emily
I have always been creative and spent a lot of time sketching on my school books instead of doing the work. Most of my art education comes from self development and trial and error. I think I always found it easier to just give it a crack and learn from my mistakes.
I draw a lot of inspiration from everyday people and ordinary places, I especially love Western Australia’s beautiful coast line. I have a passion for telling stories, whether it’s my own life experiences or life through other people’s eyes.
In 2014 I graduated from Polytechnic after studying Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design. During my studies I found I enjoyed illustrating the garments more than I liked making them. I started a sketch a day challenge for myself while studying to keep my creativity thriving. Shortly after graduating I moved to London for two years. During that time I found art became so much more than just a sketch a day. At times I was home sick or struggled with anxiety and depression. When I sketched and painted it helped me to calm my racing thoughts.
I primarily worked in black and white and it wasn’t until 2019 where I really started to get into colour and eventually oil paint. Oil paint was so different to anything I’d ever tried and there were a lot of mistakes made. But I fell in love with the medium and I now prefer to only work with oil.
2020 saw me painting more than ever but being in and out of lock downs my mental health suffered. Although I was able to create almost daily I struggled with some of the isolations and losing my job at a cafe. Fortunately during this time I was able to learn enough about myself to want to seek an adult ADHD diagnosis. After speculating for years that there might be other causes to my mental health struggles I spent one and half years delving into a diagnosis. Realising I have ADHD has hugely influenced my art and given me a lot of freedom and inspiration in my creativity.
I hope to inspire other people who may struggle with mental health and delve into these issues through my art practice.
Norman
Norman is a relatively new addition to the team and is already proving he is worth his weight in gold. He is inspiring, enthusiastic and always available for a chat. 10 out of 10 good boy.
Does nap a little too frequently. But hey, who are we to judge?
